Like the English, French and Dutch Caribbean, the Spanish Caribbean is no different in being children of Africa, a.k.a. The African diaspora. With just about 85% of Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican food heavily deriving from our African and/or mixed African roots, it wasn’t until the mid 1990’s that restaurant signs on the islands themselves began to “swop out” and adopt our comida criollo/a (creole food), to the more euro-American terms, lantino/a, Spanish, and Hispanic food. Hence the reason for most people outside of our homeland/islands use these white washed, adopted (pushed) terms, versus our original and intended ones. To this day on my beautiful island their are still some who hold on to our true heritage and have refused to submit to the derogatory terms (Latino/a, Hispanic, Spanish) that were pushed on our people and culture, intentionally designed to diminish our Afro-indigenous roots from who we’ve always been. Simply, loud and proud… AFRO-CARIBBEAN!!!

I’m goin on 38 years of age now… My wife who is lighter than me with very strong African features as well (having ALSO 3/4 grandparents of African descent) also identifies as a black woman (her siblings do as well)… Being from NY yes you have a lot that know no better but even they live life as black families (with accents) without realizing it while also (not by accident if you truly understand why) live among our other black brothas and sistas… I’ve always been interested in why we’re taught to stay away from our black identity so much that by the age of 12 I began my journey and studied our history while studying my family and peers.. It also quickly opened my eyes to governmental issues and decisions about us the more I learned… In Puerto Rico specifically we had 3 major waves, with the last being as late as the 1800’s, of African “slaves”, making MOST of the islands population AFRICAN and/or mixed African 3 TIMES!.. to this day when speaking about the African population on and off the island, due to “censuses” it is usually said that blacks/African descendants make up 12 to 65% of the entire population… When we truly educate ourselves and stop being slaves to what they (colonizers) want us to think, you’ll know it’s truly between about 45 to maybe 65/70% today, which in spite of ALL THE COLONIZATION AND WHITE WASHING being done to us to date, is fairly still significantly high… One of our most popular sayings since the mid 1800’s, swept under the rug today goes, “¿Y tu abuela, ‘dondè ‘ta?”, referring to no matter how white you appear to be or say you are, go get your “grandma” (stop hiding her) ‘cuz “she’ll” expose how you have black/African in your blood for sure!!!..
